This project is searching for metal poor stars in the outer reaches (the halo) of the Milky Way. We can do this by looking at the spectra of these stars and using them to analyse the stars’ metal content.
The main aims are:
- Gain an understanding of how to analyse spectra using Python
- Use the calculated magnitudes of stars to interpret how far into the halo we can see from ground-based telescopes
- Determine a list of criteria to isolate the metal poor stars in our observations
